Father Time still has not received the memo on Yoel Romero.
At 49 years old, the former UFC and Bellator middleweight contender stepped into the cage at Unrivaled Arena in Miami and reminded the combat sports world exactly why he has been one of the most feared men in the sport for two decades. In the main event of Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA, Romero needed barely more than a minute to finish “The Spartan” Alex Nicholson by way of broken jaw.
Nicholson — a late replacement for Hector Lombard, who withdrew before fight night — came out aggressive and actually landed the cleanest shot of the opening exchange, a counter leg kick that briefly buckled the Cuban Olympic silver medalist. It was the last good moment he would have.
Romero closed the distance, drove Nicholson to the mat with one of his trademark explosive takedowns, postured up, and dropped a short, compact left hand on the ground that ended the night. Nicholson tapped immediately, with reports surfacing soon after that the punch had broken his jaw.
It was the kind of finish that defines what Jorge Masvidal built Gamebred to deliver — no gloves, no padding, no hiding place. Just consequence.
For Nicholson, it was his fourth straight loss across disciplines, all by first-round knockout. For Romero, it was a return to the win column and a statement that he is not done. Not even close.
“Soldier of God” walked out of Miami with his hand raised and a packed crowd chanting his name. Whatever comes next for Romero, Gamebred would be happy to host it.
